Mike Ash and wife, Valerie,
retired in January 1987. Both ended their careers as managers;
Mike with Lockheed Aircraft in the Electromagnetic Laboratory of the
Skunk Works there, and Valerie with the operator services of AT&T.
The first two years of retirement were enjoyed while residing in
Cornwall in England.
Valerie and Mike have been involved in various community improvement
efforts since locating in North Bend in June of 1989. Participated
in fund raising to build the N. B. Senior Center, and subsequently
served as president of that organization for a year.
Both Valerie and Mike taught the AARP sponsored 55Alive driving class
for senior drivers for nearly 5 years, reaching several hundred seniors.
We are very excited about our successful computer club for seniors.
It has been a startling performance in coordinating and conducting the
many classes for our members and the selection of speakers at our
meetings have been most interesting. We would like to contribute
to the continuing success of our club.

Val Jones
Twelve years ago Val (Schroeder) Jones moved to
Brookings from her beloved Michigan to be with her brother, after her
former husband passed away. She met and married Melvin Jones a
retired teacher, minister and former State of Oregon job counselor.
They reside in Coos Bay.
Val grew up with the invention of the typewriter or so it seems to her.
She has pursued her love of writing with a book of published poetry and
is struggling with two unfinished books. One being "Narcissa,
Sac and I” experiences of a trip taken in '93 of the Oregon Trail
(in reverse), comparable to Narcissa Whittman and Sacagawea's trips to
the west. In previous years Val had worked for the Chicago
Tribune, The Detroit Free Press as well as several small-town
newspapers. Val was township clerk in Michigan until her
resignation, enabling her to move west. She is a
19-year veteran of RSVP as well as charter member of BASCC. She
has a son and daughter, 4 grandchildren and 1 great.
PS. Val is editor of
our BASCC Newsletter

Ed Noble
After spending four years in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954, I spent
the majority of my adult life working for the Oregon Air National Guard
as an electronics technician. I was transferred to Coos Bay in 1981, and
retired in 1989.
My wife and I belong to the North Bend Presbyterian Church, where I am
an Elder. We both like to travel and try to make at least one trip per
year. My hobby is golf, although due to health problems, I have not been
able to play much this year. I hope that changes soon.
As for computers, I am a beginner, but learning more all the time thanks
to the members of this club.

I have lived in Coos Bay for about 40 years.
For about half that time I was a stay-at-home mom and then I became a
nurse. I have worked at Bay Area Hospital and have taught nursing
at SWOCC until retirement about 5 yrs ago. Today, I teach hospice
volunteer training classes and another class called "Exploring
Death and Dying". My hobby is vegetable gardening.

My wife Betty and I moved to Coos Bay in the
spring of 1993. We lived
and worked our entire lives in the San Francisco Bay area. We feel
we
have found a "home" here in Coos Bay, having made many friends
through
the Bonsai, Fuchsia and Rhododendron Societies. We were on the
Board of
Friends of Shore Acres for six years and I served as President in
1996-97. I have also been on the Boards of the Coos Bay Sister
City
Association and the Coos Art Museum. I was instrumental in
starting or
Terramar West Homeowner's group (50 households) and have served a Chair
of same for 8 years. I rejoined BASCC a year ago and look forward
to
helping out in any way I can.
